The proposal to establish a National Academy of letters in India has been under consideration by the British government of the country long before independence. In 1944, the Government of India agreed in principle a proposal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal, a National Cultural Trust should be created to promote cultural activities in all areas. The trust would consist of three academies, including the Academy of letters. After freedom, the proposal was followed by the Government of independent India, while convened a series of lectures to work out the details.
