In 1951, PDIL was established as a wing of the fertilizer technology Corporation of India Limited, with the aim of obtaining technological self-sufficiency.
In 1978, the group of the FCI and the NFL companies have been reorganized and P & D Division of FCI Ltd. became an independent public sector company called Fertilizer (Planning and Development) India Limited (FPDIL).
