The Defense Institute of Advanced Technology (ITD) as it is known today, emerged as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 on the campus of the CME.
In 1967, the Institute was renamed as "Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), which moved to its present location in Girinagar, Pune. From the relatively narrow scope of Armament Studies in the fifties alone, the Institute's role was considerably enhanced by the R & D Defense Council in 1964 and even more in 1981
