North - East (NE) region comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura has been endowed by nature with its enormous biodiversity and diverse agro-climatic conditions. However, the region has enormous potential for development of agriculture and allied vocation, its mountainous terrain offers a challenge to its full utilization. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), a central body that plans, aid undertakes, promotes and coordinates agricultural education, research and extension education in India, formed a committee to review research in 1982 under the National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) to suggest ways and means to strengthen the research capacity of the NE Region
