India has about 14,500 km of waterways that are part of the rivers, canals, backwaters, creeks, etc. About 55 million tons of goods annually move inland water transport (IWT), a fuel - efficient mode respects the environment. Its operations are restricted to certain sections of the Ganges-Bhagirathi-Hooghly, Brahmaputra, the Barak river, the rivers in Goa, backwaters of Kerala, inland waters in Mumbai and Godavari delta regions - Krishna rivers.
