Safdarjung Hospital began as a U.S. military base hospital during World War II. In 1947 it was annexed to Irwin Hospital (now LNJP Hospital). It was taken by the Central Government in 1954 and named after Safdarjung Hospital. Until the beginning of all Institute of Medical Sciences in India in 1956, Safdarjung Hospital was the only tertiary care hospital in south Delhi. Based on the needs and development of medical care the hospital has been regularly improved facilities angles diagnosis and treatment in all specialties.
