LRS TB Hospital was established by the Tuberculosis Association of India in 1952. The hospital has been upgraded into an autonomous institute in 1991 by the Government. of India. The Institute was renamed the LRS Institute of TB and Lung Disease as an autonomous institute within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government. India. The Institute is registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (XX1)
