The Medical Council of India was established in 1934 under the Medical Council Act of India 1933, now repealed, with the main function of establishing uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and the recognition of medical qualifications in India and abroad. The number of medical schools has increased steadily over the years after Independence. It was considered that the provisions of the Medical Council Act of India were not adequate to meet the challenges posed by rapid development and progress of medical education in the country.
