The College Board was established in January 1840 with Mr. George Norton as its President. This was the forerunner of the current Presidency College, Chennai. However, a systematic policy of education for India was formulated only after 14 years of the historic expedition of 1854 (Sir Charles Wood's Education Dispatch), who noted the rationale for "creating a properly articulated system of education from primary school to university. "
