JIPM traces its origin in 1823 when a medical school called "School of Medicine Pondichery" was established by the French government. In November 1956 the Government of India took over the medical college in the wake of 'de facto' transfer of Pondicherry. The school has been upgraded as a Regional Center and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPM) on July 13, 1964.
