Bharathi University was established in Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982 under the provision of Bharathi University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The Graduate Center of the University of Madras was functioning in Coimbatore before 1982 formed the nucleus of Bharathi University. In May 1985 the University received the recognition of University Grants Commission (UGC) in New Delhi with the aim of the grants.
